AWS Interconnect - last mile launches in preview with Equinix

Hi everyone, it's Shiichan! A preview has started that makes private connections to AWS much easier.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

AWS What's New says AWS Interconnect - last mile is now available in preview with Equinix.

You can connect your infrastructure across Equinix's global network of 282 data centers to AWS in a few clicks. It gives you managed, private and resilient connections, so you don't have to order cross-connects or configure routers.

What changes

In the AWS Management Console, setup goes like this:

  • Choose an AWS Region
  • Choose a bandwidth speed
  • Choose a Direct Connect gateway
  • Enter your Equinix Fabric One project ID

AWS then generates an activation key, which you enter in the Equinix Fabric One portal to complete the setup. You can also initiate the connection from the Equinix Fabric One portal.

Dive Deep

What the connection looks like:

  • Resilience: AWS and Equinix set up quad-redundant capacity in advance, across two locations and four separate links, with BGP peering, VLANs and ASNs configured for you. Every connection comes with a 99.99% availability SLA
  • Encryption: traffic between AWS and Equinix edge devices is encrypted with MACsec by default

During the preview:

  • You can order 1 Gbps Interconnect - last mile connections at no charge
  • Two destinations are available: the US West (N. California) Region through the San Jose metro, and the US East (N. Virginia) Region through the Northern Virginia metro

When it becomes generally available, you'll be able to scale bandwidth from 1 Gbps to 100 Gbps in the console. You can create connections using the console, the AWS CLI or the API, and partners can integrate using an open API package.

Wrap-up

  • Connect from Equinix's 282 data centers to AWS in a few clicks (preview)
  • No cross-connect orders or router setup, with quad redundancy and a 99.99% SLA
  • Encrypted with MACsec by default
  • During the preview, 1 Gbps is free, for the San Jose and Northern Virginia routes

This is for network folks who link on-premises or colocation environments to AWS!
