EC2's new M8 instances expand to three more regions, including Tokyo, with up to 43% faster performance!

What was announced?

AWS's What's New announced that Amazon EC2's M8in, M8idn, M8ib, and M8idb instances are now available in three additional regions:

  • US East (Ohio)
  • Europe (Ireland)
  • Asia Pacific (Tokyo)

With this, M8in, M8idn, M8ib, and M8idb instances are now available in US East (N. Virginia, Ohio), US West (Oregon), Europe (Ireland), Asia Pacific (Tokyo), and Europe (Spain).

The story so far

Until now, these M8-family instances were only available in a smaller set of regions. Tokyo in particular is a familiar choice for users in Japan, so this expansion is probably good news for a lot of people who had been waiting for it.

What changes

With more regions supported, users who previously had to reach for a different region can now take advantage of these instances' high network and EBS performance from a region that is closer or more familiar to them.

  • On-Demand
  • Spot Instances

so it fits both always-on workloads and cost-conscious batch jobs.

Here's a rundown of each instance type's characteristics:

  • M8in / M8idn (network optimized): deliver up to 600 Gbps of network bandwidth, the highest among enhanced-networking EC2 instances. They suit real-time big data analytics, distributed in-memory caching, caching fleets for AI/ML clusters, and Telco workloads like 5G User Plane Function (UPF)
  • M8ib / M8idb (EBS optimized): deliver up to 300 Gbps of EBS bandwidth, the highest among non-accelerated EC2 instances. They fit workloads where block storage performance matters, like high-performance file systems and NoSQL databases
  • M8idn: suited for distributed computing, data analytics, and high-performance file systems that benefit from low-latency local storage
  • M8idb: suited for large commercial databases, data lakes, and NoSQL databases that benefit from both high EBS throughput and low-latency local NVMe storage

Underneath, these run on custom sixth-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors available only on AWS, paired with the latest sixth-generation AWS Nitro cards. Together, that delivers up to 43% higher performance compared to the previous generation.
