Amazon Managed Grafana Gets In-Place Upgrade to Grafana 13.2, With Git Sync for Dashboards as Code

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

Good news for dashboard lovers: Amazon Managed Grafana now supports version 13.2.

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon Managed Grafana now supports in-place upgrade from Grafana version 12.4 to 13.2.

Upgrading to 13.2 brings features launched as part of open-source Grafana versions 13.0 to 13.2.

Why it matters

With a managed service, when you get new Grafana features depends on the service. This upgrade brings features from open-source Grafana to your Managed Grafana workspaces.

What changes

Three main features become available:

  • Git Sync: link a workspace to a Git repository and treat dashboards as code
  • Dynamic dashboards: a more adaptable approach to layout and paneling
  • PromQL query support in the Amazon CloudWatch data source plugin

With Git Sync, dashboard modifications can be tracked, reviewed, and reverted through version control.

Dive Deep

Dynamic dashboards let you build responsive views driven by conditions that respond to the data and variables in scope.

With PromQL support in the CloudWatch data source plugin, you can query metrics that CloudWatch takes in via its OpenTelemetry (OTLP) endpoint. This is in addition to the existing Metric Search and Metrics Insights query types.

Here is how upgrading and availability work:

  • Upgrade with just a few clicks from the AWS Console, AWS SDK, or AWS CLI
  • Supported in all AWS Regions where Amazon Managed Grafana is generally available

For the full list of new features and the steps, see "Differences between Grafana versions" and "Update your workspace version" in the Amazon Managed Grafana User Guide.

Wrap-up

  • In-place upgrade from Grafana 12.4 to 13.2
  • Git Sync puts dashboard changes under version control
  • Dynamic dashboards for more flexible layouts
  • PromQL in the CloudWatch data source

This is a great fit if you want dashboards in Git, or want to explore CloudWatch metrics with PromQL!
