Amazon RDS for Oracle no longer requires automatic minor version upgrades for JVM, Spatial, Locator, and OLAP options
Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Here's a quietly nice change for running RDS for Oracle.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
AWS What's New announced that Amazon RDS for Oracle now lets you turn off automatic minor version upgrades on new and existing DB instances that use the JVM, Spatial, Locator, or OLAP option.
The story so far
Previously, these options required automatic minor version upgrades to be enabled.
What changes
You now decide when to apply minor version upgrades. That's good news for teams who want maintenance to follow their own schedule.
Dive Deep
Operational notes:
- If you turn off automatic minor version upgrades, apply new minor versions regularly so your instances keep the latest Oracle security fixes
- To keep automatic upgrades on and still control the order in which environments are upgraded, use the AWS Organizations upgrade rollout policy
- Available in all commercial AWS Regions and the AWS GovCloud (US) Regions where RDS for Oracle is available
See "Adding options to Oracle DB instances" in the Amazon RDS User Guide for more on options.
Wrap-up
- Automatic minor upgrades can be turned off even with JVM, Spatial, Locator, or OLAP options
- If you turn them off, apply updates regularly for security fixes
- Use the upgrade rollout policy if you only need to control ordering
This one is for DBAs who use Oracle options and want tight control over upgrade timing!
