Three filters become one: Hierarchy Filter in Amazon Quick

Hello, it's Shii-chan! Ever had a dashboard crowded with a row of filters? Here's an update for that!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that Amazon Quick now supports the hierarchy filter, a single control for drilling through related dimensions such as Region, Country, and City.

The story so far

To filter hierarchical fields, you had to place separate Region, Country, and City controls side by side. That cluttered the dashboard, and readers needed to know which country belonged to which region.

What changes

You can replace several stacked filter controls with one, and readers reach their data in fewer clicks.

On a retail sales dashboard, it goes like this:

  • A reader opens one dropdown
  • They expand a region to see its countries
  • They expand a country to see its cities
  • They can select any mix along the way

The relationships are visible in the control, so readers don't need to know which country belongs to which region!

Dive Deep

  • One filter holds up to five dimension levels, arranged broadest to most detailed
  • Each selection narrows the next level and auto-selects its parent chain
  • Authors add a filter, set its type to Hierarchy filter, and arrange the fields parent to child
  • It's available today in all AWS Regions where Amazon Quick is supported

Wrap-up

  • One filter handles hierarchies like Region, Country, and City
  • Up to five levels, broadest to most detailed
  • Auto-selecting parents means readers don't need to memorize the hierarchy
  • Available in all supported Regions

Good news for both dashboard authors and the people reading them!
