RDS for Oracle's M8i and R8i Instances Expand to More Regions!

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Today's news is about RDS for Oracle instances arriving in more Regions!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

In AWS What's New, AWS announced that Amazon RDS for Oracle now supports M8i and R8i instances in additional AWS Regions.

The newly added Regions are:

  • Both M8i and R8i: Asia Pacific (New Zealand), Canada West (Calgary)
  • R8i only: Europe (Milan, Stockholm, and Zurich), Israel (Tel Aviv)

Why it matters

M8i and R8i are powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors, available only on AWS. The announcement says they deliver the highest performance and fastest memory bandwidth among comparable Intel processors in the cloud.

Compared to previous generation Intel-based instances:

  • Up to 15% better price-performance
  • 2.5x more memory bandwidth

What changes

Teams running Oracle databases in these Regions can now choose the newer instance generation. You can do that without moving the data out of the Region you want it in.

Dive Deep

The instances are available in the Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model, with these editions and sizes:

  • Oracle Database Enterprise Edition (EE): sizes from large to 48xlarge, plus bare metal sizes metal-48xl and metal-96xl
  • Oracle Database Standard Edition 2 (SE2): sizes from large to 4xlarge, plus bare metal sizes metal-48xl and metal-96xl

For available instance configurations, pricing, and Region availability, see the Amazon RDS for Oracle pricing page.

Wrap-up

  • M8i and R8i are available in Asia Pacific (New Zealand) and Canada West (Calgary)
  • R8i is also available in Europe (Milan, Stockholm, and Zurich) and Israel (Tel Aviv)
  • Up to 15% better price-performance and 2.5x more memory bandwidth than the previous generation
  • BYOL EE and SE2 are supported, including bare metal sizes

If you run Oracle on RDS in these Regions, this one is worth a look!
