IP-Layer Data Localization Arrives: Cloudflare's Regionalized IP Bindings!

Hey everyone, it's me, Shii-chan! Today I found an update that folks who care about where their data lives are going to love.

Cloudflare Changelog developers.cloudflare.com

What was announced?

From Cloudflare's Changelog: Regional Services now supports Regionalized IP Bindings. It's part of the Data Localization Suite, and it lets you regionalize traffic at the IP layer for prefixes you bring to Cloudflare through BYOIP (Bring Your Own IP).

The story so far

Until now, if you wanted to keep traffic in a region, you reached for Regional Hostnames and pinned the processing region per hostname. That works great when you address services by name — but not so much when you talk to a service by its IP address instead.

What changes

With Regionalized IP Bindings, you can bind a CIDR from one of your prefixes to a region. That's ideal for address-map deployments and any service you address by IP rather than hostname. Cloudflare then terminates TLS and processes traffic to those addresses only within the data centers in that region, so the data path stays neatly inside your chosen region.

Dive Deep

To use it, you'll need two entitlements: Regional Services and Regional Services for BYOIP. This isn't a self-serve toggle — you contact your account team to enable them. When you're ready to set things up, the Regionalized IP Bindings guide walks you through it.

Wrap-up

  • Regional Services adds a new feature, Regionalized IP Bindings
  • Bind a CIDR from your BYOIP prefix to a specific region at the IP layer
  • Complements hostname-based Regional Hostnames from the IP side
  • TLS termination and processing stay inside the chosen region's data centers
  • Requires entitlements enabled by your account team

This one's for teams in tightly regulated industries and anyone exposing services directly by IP address!
