R2 Data Catalog Table Maintenance, Now Fully Visible in the Dashboard!
Hey everyone, it's Shiichan! Today I've got a quiet but handy update for anyone using R2 Data Catalog!
Cloudflare ChangelogWhat was announced?
On the Cloudflare Changelog, they announced that R2 Data Catalog now provides table-level maintenance visibility and manual compaction queueing in the dashboard.
Why it matters
R2 Data Catalog manages Iceberg-format tables, but until now there wasn't much of a way to see when maintenance tasks like compaction or snapshot expiration were eligible to run, or to review what maintenance had already happened. Without a clear view of table state, it's hard for operators to judge when cleanup is needed.
What changes
You can now check a table's maintenance status without leaving the dashboard. Here's how.
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, go to R2 Data Catalog
- Select a catalog, then open the Explorer tab (which opens by default)
- Select the table you're interested in
- Select the Maintenance tab
Dive Deep
The updated dashboard adds several pieces.
- Maintenance tab: View compaction and snapshot expiration settings, schedules, and next eligibility, alongside the existing Schema and Metadata tabs
- Recent runs: A paginated audit log of job status and duration, with expandable rows for manifest rewrites, compaction, and snapshot expiration, including operation metrics for each
- Manual queueing: Selecting "Queue maintenance" requests compaction during the next normal scheduler poll. It checks permissions and tells you when another maintenance job conflicts or the daily accepted-request limit has been reached
- Updated catalog layout: Catalog metrics move to a Metrics tab, browsing happens in the renamed Explorer tab, and switching between table details now uses tabs instead of a scroll-to-section sidebar
- Improved schema browser: For accounts with the schema browser enabled, selecting a namespace opens its tables in the right pane
Wrap-up
- R2 Data Catalog's dashboard now has table-level maintenance visibility
- The Maintenance tab shows settings, schedules, and next run timing, while Recent runs lets you audit past executions
- You can manually request compaction via Queue maintenance, with permission and conflict checks plus a daily limit check
- The catalog's overall layout was also reorganized, with an Explorer tab and tab-based table details
This is a great fit if you run Iceberg tables on R2 Data Catalog and want to keep a close eye on table maintenance!
