ChatGPT Went Mainstream in Early 2026, and Japan Climbed the Ranks!
Hey everyone, it's me, Shii-chan! Today we're looking at who is using AI, and where, the story of how usage is spreading. I love staring at numbers, so I got pretty excited about this one!
OpenAI News
What was announced?
This comes from OpenAI's News (a piece of OpenAI Signals research): a report on ChatGPT usage during the first quarter of 2026 (Q1). In short, it says ChatGPT usage has broadened, from a small set of early adopters to a wider mix of people, countries, and tasks.
One important caveat: this analysis only covers messages sent on consumer plans (Free, Go, Plus, and Pro). It excludes Codex and the enterprise and education products, so it understates real workplace and educational usage.
The story so far
For a while, ChatGPT felt like a tool for early adopters, younger people and large, established markets. If you infer gender from names, users with more masculine names used to dominate, though last year they reached roughly parity with users who have typically feminine names.
What changes
The Q1 data suggests ChatGPT is turning into a more mainstream tool. The mix of people using it is wider, more countries are on board, and recurring, go-to tasks are growing. Here's how the original piece sums it up:
ChatGPT is becoming a more mainstream tool: used by a broader mix of people, in more countries, and for increasingly recurring tasks.
So it's moving from a special tool for a few toward something woven into many people's lives and work.
Dive Deep
Let's look at the actual numbers.
Gender (inferred from names)
Users with typically feminine names grew their share again this quarter, and now make up more than half of the users for whom gender can be inferred (the gender inference methodology is explained on this data page).
Age
In line with ChatGPT's overall growth, message counts rose across every age group. Users under 35 still account for the largest share of total messages, but users over 35 gained share this quarter.
Country rankings
OpenAI ranks countries by messages sent per capita, and many of this quarter's biggest gains came from outside the most established markets, spanning Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, and Africa. Here are the 10 fastest-rising countries (these are relative rank changes, not total usage):
| Country | 2025Q4 | 2026Q1 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dominican Republic | 53 | 44 | +9 |
| Haiti | 91 | 82 | +9 |
| Japan | 43 | 35 | +8 |
| Mexico | 60 | 54 | +6 |
| Tanzania | 102 | 96 | +6 |
| Brazil | 47 | 42 | +5 |
| Costa Rica | 38 | 33 | +5 |
| Myanmar | 99 | 94 | +5 |
| Papua New Guinea | 109 | 104 | +5 |
| Austria | 15 | 11 | +4 |
Japan climbed from 43 to 35 (+8), which honestly made me a little happy!
How work gets done
Within work-related usage on consumer plans, creating written and visual materials still leads, but its share slipped over time as more specialized tasks grew popular. The fastest-growing work tasks were content creation, health-related documentation, and information retrieval, a sign that adoption is spreading across professions and industries. (Codex usage is excluded here, and it's likely shifting technical work toward coding agents.)
For researchers who want to dig into the finer data, OpenAI also publishes downloadable data and enterprise usage data.
Wrap-up
- In 2026 Q1, ChatGPT usage broadened from early adopters to a wider audience (consumer plans only; Codex, enterprise, and education excluded).
- Users with typically feminine names now make up over half, and users over 35 gained share too.
- The fastest-rising countries cluster in Latin America and the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, and Africa, and Japan climbed from 43 to 35.
- At work, writing and visuals still lead, while specialized tasks like health documentation and information retrieval grew fast.
If you want to see who AI is actually reaching, if you watch markets or policy, or if you're curious about how adoption is spreading in Japan, this report is for you!
