ChatGPT for Teachers Now Reaches 300,000 Educators!

What was announced?
According to OpenAI News, ChatGPT for Teachers — free for verified US K-12 educators and staff — is expanding to 55 school district systems across 20 states, adding over 100,000 educators. The expansion includes 31 new districts, with 9 in Texas and 5 in California.
The story so far
ChatGPT for Teachers launched in 2025, initially reaching about 150,000 educators. With this expansion, OpenAI now partners with over 100 K-12 organizations across 30 states, bringing the total to more than 300,000 educators. Free access is set to continue through June 2028.
What changes
Beyond the expanded reach, there's also a new privacy commitment. OpenAI signed what it calls the industry's first data privacy network agreement covering 16 states — Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington (California is covered under a separate agreement). Data handling follows FERPA, and by default data isn't used to train models.
"AI should support learning, not shortcut it, and educators should remain in control."
That line from the original announcement sums up the design goal: keeping educators firmly in charge of how it's used.

OpenAI also shared usage data from January 1 to July 16, 2026: over 1.9 million messages in total, broken down as:
- Report cards and progress reports: 900,000
- Lesson planning: 800,000
- Substitute teacher materials: over 100,000
- Teacher evaluation materials: over 100,000
This summer, OpenAI also ran "AI Skills Jams" training sessions with over 1,600 educators, administrators, and district leaders. 93% said they gained reusable knowledge, and 96% said they planned to apply it within 30 days.
A few examples of how it's being used in practice:
- A music teacher built out a year's worth of curriculum resources
- A 4th-grade teacher restructured long lesson plans into 30-40 minute blocks
- Chicago educators used it for science experiment simulations, helping students build animations, and analyzing literary devices across more than 200 novels
- A principal used it to handle complex scheduling tasks that used to take hours or days
