Codex Grows Up: Six Role Plugins and a New Sites Feature!

Hey everyone, it's Shiichan! Today's news is a big one, and it's not just for developers, so let me walk you through it.

OpenAI News openai.com

What was announced?

On OpenAI's News, OpenAI announced a set of updates that stretch Codex across every role, tool, and workflow. Codex started life as a software development tool, but this release adds three new ways to work with it:

  • plugins that adapt Codex to your role and tools
  • annotations that let you refine the result in place
  • a preview of sites: interactive websites and apps you can share with your workspace via a URL

And Codex is on a roll: more than 5 million people now use it every week, and non-developers like analysts, marketers, designers, investors, and bankers already make up about 20% of users, growing more than 3x as fast as developers.

Why it matters

Codex began as a coding companion, but it's increasingly used for work that involves no code at all. Inside OpenAI, non-technical teams already use it to build internal apps, prepare executive materials, and create dashboards. At Zapier, teams pull context from Slack, Google Docs, and Coda into postmortems and incident plans, and at NVIDIA researchers use it to speed up experiment workflows. The big shift here is that handing work to an AI agent is no longer a developer-only superpower.

What changes

The headline is that you can get a version of Codex shaped around your job, no coding required. The six new role-specific plugins each bundle the apps, skills, instructions, and workflows a given role uses most, 62 apps and 110 skills in total.

On top of that, the new sites feature turns Codex's analysis and plans into an interactive web page you can share with your team by URL, instead of a local file. Dashboards, planners, and review workspaces become something you can just hand out.

Dive Deep

Here's what the six role-specific plugins cover:

  • Data analytics: explain why metrics changed and build reports with Snowflake, Databricks Genie, Hex, and Tableau.
  • Creative production: make campaign boards and ad variations with Figma, Canva, Shutterstock, Picsart, and Fal.
  • Sales: find priority accounts, prep for meetings, and update records with Salesforce, HubSpot, Slack, Outreach, Clay, Rox, and Actively.
  • Product design: turn ideas into reviewable prototypes with Figma and Canva, including prototyping from a live URL.
  • Public equity investing: review earnings and compare companies using Moody's, Daloopa, Datasite, FactSet, LSEG, S&P, PitchBook, and Hebbia.
  • Investment banking: prepare pitch materials and analyze comparable companies and transactions.

Plugins work out of the box, and you can adapt them or build and share your own. More are coming, including Corporate Finance, Private Equity Investing, Marketing Strategy, Strategy Consulting, and Legal, with an open ecosystem planned so partners can ship plugins directly in Codex and ChatGPT.

Sites is in preview for business and enterprise, built with early partners like Vercel, Wix, Base44, Replit, Lovable, Figma, Webflow, and Emergent, and Codex can keep a site up to date as details change. Annotations, meanwhile, let you point at the exact part you want to fix, and they now extend beyond code and Markdown to documents, spreadsheets, and slides.

To get started, role plugins are rolling out by region and you install them from the Codex plugin directory; for business and enterprise, admins control app permissions. Sites is in preview for Business and Enterprise, and enterprise admins enable it in admin settings.
