Hey there, it's Shii-chan! AWS has another regional expansion update today — the compute-optimized Amazon EC2 C8g instances are now available in a few more places.

What was announced?

According to AWS's What's New, Amazon EC2 C8g instances are now available in three additional regions:

  • Asia Pacific (Taipei)
  • Asia Pacific (New Zealand)
  • AWS GovCloud (US-East)

C8g instances are compute-optimized and powered by AWS Graviton4 processors, built on the AWS Nitro System. Nitro offloads CPU virtualization, storage, and networking functions to dedicated hardware and software, boosting both performance and security.

The story so far

C8g instances already existed, but their regional availability had been limited. If you wanted to run workloads like high performance computing (HPC), batch processing, gaming, video encoding, scientific modeling, distributed analytics, CPU-based ML inference, or ad serving, but your region wasn't supported, you'd have had to reach for a different region instead. The newly added GovCloud (US-East) is a special region for US government agencies and heavily regulated industries, so bringing Graviton4 performance there is a notable part of this update.

What changes

Users in Taiwan and New Zealand can now run C8g closer to their own data and users, which helps with latency and keeping data within the region. For teams working in GovCloud (US-East), it's a welcome change too — you can now pick the latest-generation Graviton4 instance while still meeting your compliance requirements.

Dive Deep

At the core of C8g is the AWS Graviton4 processor, which delivers the following performance gains over Graviton3:

  • Up to 30% better performance overall
  • Up to 40% faster for databases
  • Up to 30% faster for web applications
  • Up to 45% faster for large Java applications

There's a solid lineup of instance sizes too — 12 in total, including two bare metal sizes. Compared to the Graviton3-based C7g, the larger sizes offer up to 3x more vCPUs and memory. On the networking side, C8g supports up to 50 Gbps of enhanced networking bandwidth and up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth to Amazon EBS, giving you plenty of headroom for large-scale distributed processing and storage-intensive workloads.
