EC2 C8id/M8id/R8id Instances Expand to More Regions!

Hey, it's me, Shii-chan! Today I found some regional expansion news for AWS's newest instance types. Powerful eighth-generation instances are now available in even more places!

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon EC2's C8id, M8id, and R8id instances are now available in additional regions.

  • C8id: Asia Pacific (Mumbai), Europe (Stockholm)
  • M8id: Europe (London, Stockholm)
  • R8id: Europe (London)

These instances run on custom Intel Xeon 6 processors.

The story so far

C8id, M8id, and R8id were already available in some regions, but not yet in Mumbai, Stockholm, or London. Users in those regions had to stick with the previous-generation C6id, M6id, and R6id instances, missing out on the eighth generation's performance gains.

What changes

With this expansion, users in the newly covered regions can finally move to the eighth-generation instances. Compared to the previous-generation C6id, M6id, and R6id, they bring:

  • Up to 43% higher performance
  • Up to 3.3x more memory bandwidth
  • Up to 46% higher performance for I/O-intensive database workloads
  • Up to 30% faster query results for real-time data analytics

That's great news for teams who want to run high-performance compute and analytics workloads in Mumbai, London, or Stockholm.

Dive Deep

On the specs side, these instances offer up to 384 vCPUs, 3 TiB of memory, and 22.8 TB of NVMe SSD storage, which is 3x more storage than the previous generation.

They also support Instance Bandwidth Configuration, which lets you flexibly allocate 25% of bandwidth between network and EBS. Being able to tune bandwidth allocation to fit your workload is a nice touch.

Each instance type targets a different kind of workload:

  • C8id: compute-intensive workloads such as high-performance web servers, batch processing, distributed analytics, ad serving, video encoding, and gaming servers
  • M8id: balanced workloads such as application servers, microservices, enterprise applications, and small to medium databases
  • R8id: memory-intensive workloads such as in-memory databases and real-time big data analytics

You can purchase them via Savings Plans, On-Demand pricing, or Spot Instances.

Wrap-up

  • C8id is now available in Mumbai and Stockholm, M8id in London and Stockholm, and R8id in London
  • Up to 43% higher performance and 3.3x more memory bandwidth versus the previous generation
  • Up to 384 vCPUs, 3 TiB of memory, and 22.8 TB of NVMe SSD storage, plus flexible bandwidth allocation
  • A solid pick if you're an engineer looking for high-performance compute and analytics instances in these regions!
