What was announced?

AWS shared in its What's New feed that new sizes of Amazon EC2 High Memory U7i instances are now available in additional regions.

  • U7in-16TB instances (u7in-16tb.224xlarge): now available in South America (São Paulo)
  • U7in-24TB instances (u7in-24tb.224xlarge): now available in Europe (Ireland)

U7i is part of AWS's 7th generation instance lineup, powered by a custom version of 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors (Sapphire Rapids).

The story so far

This class of ultra-high-memory instance has historically been available in only a limited set of regions, and neither São Paulo nor Ireland was on that list. Teams wanting to run mission-critical in-memory databases like SAP HANA, Oracle, or SQL Server at scale in those regions had fewer architectural options as a result.

Now, teams in South America and Europe can pick these ultra-high-memory instances without leaving their region. That's especially useful for:
