6 TiB of DDR5 Lands in Zurich: EC2 High Memory U7i Arrives!
Hi, it's me, Shiichan! Today I've got news about a new region rollout from AWS!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to AWS What's New, Amazon EC2 High Memory U7i-6TB instances (u7i-6tb.112xlarge) are now available in the AWS Europe (Zurich) region. U7i is part of AWS's 7th generation instance lineup, powered by custom 4th generation Intel Xeon Scalable processors (Sapphire Rapids).
The story so far
U7i-6TB instances were already available in other regions, but Zurich wasn't among them yet. Teams running mission-critical in-memory databases in Switzerland or elsewhere in Europe wanted the latest generation of massive-memory instances, but couldn't get them in their local region.
What changes
Teams building systems in the Zurich region can now use an instance packed with 6 TiB of DDR5 memory right in their local region. According to AWS, it's a great fit for mission-critical in-memory databases like SAP HANA, Oracle, and SQL Server, making it good news for anyone looking to scale transaction processing throughput in a fast-growing data environment.
Dive Deep
Here's a look at the U7i-6TB spec sheet:
- Memory: 6 TiB of DDR5
- vCPUs: 448
- Amazon EBS bandwidth: up to 100 Gbps (for fast data loading and backups)
- Network bandwidth: up to 100 Gbps, with ENA Express support
- Price performance: up to 45% better than existing U-1 instances
Instances with this much memory and network bandwidth in one box aren't common, making this a strong option if you want to run a massive in-memory database on a single instance.
Wrap-up
- Amazon EC2 High Memory U7i-6TB (u7i-6tb.112xlarge) is now available in AWS Europe (Zurich)
- 6 TiB of DDR5 memory, 448 vCPUs, up to 100 Gbps of EBS/network bandwidth
- Up to 45% better price performance than existing U-1 instances
- Built for mission-critical in-memory databases like SAP HANA, Oracle, and SQL Server
If your team runs huge, mission-critical in-memory databases out of Zurich, this one's worth checking out!
