General-Purpose Instances, Sovereign Cloud Edition: EC2 M8i and M8i-flex Expand to a New Region!

Hey everyone, it's me, Shii-chan!

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon EC2 M8i and M8i-flex instances are now available in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud (Germany) region. M8i and M8i-flex are general-purpose instances powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors that are only available on AWS.

The story so far

M8i and M8i-flex were already available in other regions, and this expands that lineup into the AWS European Sovereign Cloud (Germany) region, supporting the sovereign cloud need to keep systems within the EU.

What changes

Here's what the performance numbers look like:

  • Up to 15% better price-performance compared to previous-generation Intel-based instances
  • 2.5x more memory bandwidth than the previous generation
  • Up to 20% higher performance than M7i and M7i-flex, with even higher gains for specific workloads
  • Up to 30% faster for PostgreSQL, up to 60% faster for NGINX, and up to 40% faster for AI deep learning recommendation models

That means web servers, microservices, and small-to-medium data stores can now run with better performance in this region too.

Dive Deep

M8i-flex offers the common sizes from large to 16xlarge, making it a great first choice for general-purpose workloads that don't fully use all their compute resources. M8i offers all 13 sizes, including 2 bare metal sizes, plus the newly added 96xlarge size — a good fit for workloads with continuous high CPU usage or that need the largest instance sizes. It's also SAP-certified.
