Amazon EC2 R8g Lands in Five More Regions!

What was announced?

According to the AWS What's New feed, Amazon EC2 R8g instances are now available in more regions. This round adds Asia Pacific (Thailand, New Zealand), Africa (Cape Town), Europe (Milan), and Canada West (Calgary) — five regions in total.

R8g is a memory-optimized instance built on AWS Graviton4 processors, aimed at memory-hungry workloads like databases, in-memory caches, and real-time big data analytics.

The story so far

R8g had already launched, but it was only offered in a limited set of regions. So when the footprint expands like this, people in those areas can pick the latest Graviton4 generation from a data center closer to home.

What changes

If your infrastructure lives in one of the newly added regions, you can now select R8g directly. Running it in a nearby region helps with latency and data residency, and it's great to run memory-heavy apps on the price-performance of a new generation.

Dive Deep

The R8g instances come with a pretty generous spec sheet, claiming up to 30% better performance than the Graviton3 generation. Concretely, that's up to 30% faster for web apps, 40% faster for databases, and 45% faster for large Java applications.

Sizes go up to 48xlarge, with up to 1.5 TB of memory (3x more than R7g!). There are 12 sizes including 2 bare metal options, and networking reaches up to 50 Gbps, with up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth to Amazon EBS. It's all built on the AWS Nitro System.
