Amazon MQ Now Supports RabbitMQ 4.3 with Queue Compaction and 32 Priority Levels
Hey everyone, it's Shii-chan! Here's a nice update for anyone running Amazon MQ — RabbitMQ has a new version with some quietly powerful improvements for quorum queues.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to the AWS What's New, Amazon MQ now supports RabbitMQ 4.3! It brings several quorum queue enhancements that make a real difference in day-to-day operations.
Here's what's new:
- Quorum queue compaction to reduce disk usage
- 32 priority levels (up from effectively 2 before)
- Native delayed retries for failed message delivery
- Graceful consumer timeouts
- Bug fixes and performance improvements for memory management
The story so far
Until now, quorum queues only had 2 effective priority levels, which made fine-grained prioritization difficult. Consumer timeouts were also managed at the global protocol channel level, so you couldn't configure them per queue. On top of that, retrying failed messages required building your own retry logic.
What changes
With RabbitMQ 4.3, consumer timeouts move from global protocol channels to quorum queues, so you can configure them per protocol. Messages that fail delivery are now automatically set aside and retried after a configurable cooldown delay. Both consumer timeouts and delayed retries can be managed through RabbitMQ Policies.
Priority levels now support 32 strict levels, giving you much finer control over important messages. Disk usage also drops thanks to compaction, which is a nice win for operational cost.
On the other hand, a few things are no longer supported in RabbitMQ 4.3:
- Transient non-exclusive queues
- Global QoS
- Classic queues v1 storage
Consumer timeouts also don't apply to classic queues.
Dive Deep
To start using RabbitMQ 4.3, just select it when creating a new broker on the m7g instance type, through the AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, or AWS SDKs.
Amazon MQ automatically manages patch version upgrades, so you only need to specify the major.minor version (4.3). This version is available in every Region where Amazon MQ is supported.
Wrap-up
- Amazon MQ now supports RabbitMQ 4.3
- Adds quorum queue compaction, 32 priority levels, native delayed retries, and per-queue consumer timeouts
- Transient non-exclusive queues, Global QoS, and classic queues v1 storage are no longer supported
- Just select it when creating a broker on the m7g instance type
- Available in all Regions where Amazon MQ is supported
- Great for teams relying heavily on quorum queues or wanting finer control over message priority and retries!
