New Extended Support minor versions land for RDS for MySQL!

Hey there, it's me, Shii-chan! Today's update is a quiet but important one for RDS.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

On the AWS What's New page, AWS announced two new Amazon RDS Extended Support minor versions for RDS for MySQL:

  • MySQL 5.7: 5.7.44-rds.20260902
  • MySQL 8.0: 8.0.46-rds.20260908

Amazon RDS Extended Support gives you up to three additional years of fixes for critical CVEs and bugs after a major version's standard support end date. This update refreshes the versions available under that program.

The story so far

Ideally you'd move to a new major version as soon as standard support ends, but in practice, application-side testing and compatibility checks often take longer than that. Extended Support exists precisely for teams in that position — it keeps delivering critical fixes during that extra runway.

What changes

Whether you're on the 5.7 or 8.0 line under Extended Support, updating to these new minor versions gets you the latest CVE and bug fixes. You can upgrade using any of these three methods:

  • Amazon RDS Blue/Green Deployments
  • In-place upgrade
  • Restore from a snapshot

You can also migrate from an external MySQL source to MySQL 8.4 using AWS Database Migration Service. Creating or updating your database can be done through the Amazon RDS Management Console or the AWS CLI.

Wrap-up

  • RDS for MySQL Extended Support now includes 5.7.44-rds.20260902 and 8.0.46-rds.20260908
  • Extended Support provides up to three extra years of critical CVE and bug fixes after standard support ends
  • Upgrade via Blue/Green Deployments, in-place upgrade, or snapshot restore
  • AWS DMS can help migrate from external MySQL to MySQL 8.4
  • Worth checking your patch schedule if you're still running MySQL past its standard support window
