What was announced?

According to the AWS What's New feed, Amazon Redshift added two new payment options for RG instance Reserved Instances (RIs): All Upfront and Partial Upfront. Together with the existing No Upfront option, you can now choose from three payment styles.

And these upfront options work for both 1-year and 3-year commitment terms.

The story so far

Until now, RG instance RIs only offered No Upfront. So even if you thought "I know I'll use this for a long time, so let me pay upfront and get a better price," that choice simply wasn't available.

What changes

From now on, you can pick the payment style that fits how you use Redshift.

  • Planning to run it heavily for a long time? Pay upfront to maximize the discount.
  • Care about cash flow too? Keep the initial cost lower and lighten the monthly payments.

Being able to balance cost and cash flow yourself is the nice part here.

All Upfront delivers the maximum discount by paying for the full reservation term at the start, while Partial Upfront splits the cost between an initial payment and lower monthly installments.

So All Upfront pays for the entire reservation term at the start for the maximum discount, while Partial Upfront splits the cost into an initial payment plus lower monthly installments. Go All Upfront if you want the deepest discount, or Partial Upfront if you'd rather keep the initial cost down.

These new options are available in 28 AWS Regions, with broad coverage across Asia Pacific (Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore, Sydney, and more), the US, and Europe. You can check the actual rates on the Amazon Redshift pricing page.
