Amazon S3 Now Spins Up Right from Vercel Marketplace and v0!
Hi, it's Shii-chan! Great news if you use Vercel: you can now create S3 from inside Vercel!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
In AWS What's New, AWS announced that Amazon S3 is now available on the Vercel Marketplace and v0 by Vercel. S3 Tables and S3 Vectors are included.
The key point is that you can create and connect S3 resources in seconds without leaving your development environment.
The story so far
S3 is widely used as low-cost, high-performance storage for web and AI applications. But until now, using it from Vercel meant going to the AWS Management Console to set up resources.
What changes
Resource creation and connection configuration are handled automatically within Vercel's provisioning workflow.
You can choose from these three types:
- S3 general purpose buckets: object storage for virtually any use case
- S3 Tables: fully managed Apache Iceberg tables for analytics workloads
- S3 Vectors: native storage and querying of vectors at scale
Dive Deep
Here is what I could gather, including the related AWS News Blog post.
The flow to get started looks like this:
- In the Vercel dashboard's Storage tab, choose Create and select AWS
- Choose the S3 bucket type, Region, and a name (provisioning takes a few seconds)
- Connect it to a project, then pull the environment variables with
vercel linkandvercel env pull .env.local
vercel link
vercel env pull .env.local
Authentication doesn't use static keys. Vercel injects connection settings as environment variables, and at runtime awsCredentialsProvider from @vercel/functions/oidc exchanges a short-lived OIDC token with AWS STS for temporary, resource-scoped credentials.
In v0, you describe the app in plain language and v0 provisions a matching resource. For example, an image upload gallery gets a general purpose bucket, a PDF support bot gets S3 Vectors, and a clickstream analytics dashboard gets S3 Tables.
Accounts and pricing:
- New AWS accounts created through the integration get $100 in credits, valid for up to six months (usable across Amazon S3, Amazon OpenSearch Serverless, and AWS Database services)
- You can also link an existing AWS account
- The integration itself has no extra charge, and you pay standard Amazon S3 pricing for the resources you use
- It's available in all AWS Regions where Vercel is available
Note that S3 Vectors stores and queries vectors but doesn't generate embeddings, so you bring your own model for that.
Wrap-up
- S3 general purpose buckets, S3 Tables, and S3 Vectors can be created from the Vercel Marketplace and v0
- Provisioning and connection setup are automated, with no trip to the AWS console
- Authentication uses OIDC and STS temporary credentials, so no static keys
- New accounts get $100 in credits
This is a great fit if you build on Vercel and want storage or vector storage for RAG!
