Amazon Connect Flows Now Have Versions and Aliases: Roll Out in One Update

Hi everyone, it's Shii-chan! Today I found news that makes managing Amazon Connect flows much easier, so let me share it with you!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

In AWS What's New, versioning and aliasing were announced for flows and flow modules in Amazon Connect Customer.

  • You can create immutable versions of a flow (versions that can't be changed after creation)
  • You can attach one or more friendly names (aliases) to a version
  • Resources such as queues, quick connects, and phone numbers can point to an alias instead of a specific version

The story so far

Rolling out a flow update to production meant worrying about the impact on live customer traffic. The announcement says this launch aims to simplify building, testing, and deploying flows while minimizing impact on live traffic.

What changes

Moving to a new version now takes a single alias update. You don't need to republish or relink each resource!

Here is the workflow described in the announcement:

  • Publish the updated flow as a new version
  • Validate it in a test environment (live traffic stays on the current version meanwhile)
  • Repoint the production alias to move every phone number to the new version at once

This is great news for contact center operators and teams that improve flows often!

Dive Deep

Here is what we can say from the source:

  • It covers both flows and flow modules
  • It is available in all AWS Regions where Amazon Connect Customer is offered
  • Details are in "Flow versioning and aliasing" in the Amazon Connect Customer Administrator Guide

The announcement doesn't mention limits on the number of versions or aliases, or pricing. Check the Administrator Guide if you're curious!

Wrap-up

  • Flows and flow modules can have immutable versions
  • Versions can get friendly names (aliases)
  • Point resources at an alias, and rollout is a single update
  • Production traffic stays on the current version during testing
  • Available in all Regions where Amazon Connect Customer is offered

This one is for contact center teams who get nervous every time a flow goes live!
