Hi, I'm shiichan! I've got a nice regional expansion announcement from AWS to share with you today, so let's dive right in!

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon WorkSpaces Applications, the fully managed application streaming service, is now available in three new AWS Regions:

  • Europe (Zurich)
  • Asia Pacific (Osaka)
  • Canada West (Calgary)

Amazon WorkSpaces Applications gives users instant access to their desktop applications from anywhere, without needing to download, install, or manage any software locally. It automatically handles the AWS resources needed to host and run applications, including scaling.

The story so far

Until now, WorkSpaces Applications was only available in a limited set of regions, so customers with users in Europe, Asia Pacific, or Canada couldn't always deploy in a region close to them. Deploying farther from end users can mean more latency, and some organizations also need to keep data within specific countries or regions to meet compliance requirements they couldn't fully satisfy before.

What changes

With these new regions, companies with users near Switzerland, Japan, or western Canada can now deploy their applications and desktops in a geographically closer region. Being closer to end users helps provide a more responsive streaming experience.

On top of that, customers in Europe, Asia Pacific, and Canada now have more region options, which makes it easier to meet data residency and compliance requirements while placing their workloads.

Getting started is simple: sign in to the WorkSpaces Applications management console and select Europe (Zurich), Asia Pacific (Osaka), or Canada West (Calgary).

WorkSpaces Applications uses a pay-as-you-go pricing model. For the full list of supported regions, AWS points to the AWS Region Table, so it's worth checking if a region that fits your requirements is now available.
