What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, AWS Direct Connect now offers 100 Gbps dedicated connections at its existing location inside the Cirion data center in Lima, Peru. From this location, you can now establish private, direct network access to all public AWS Regions except those in China, plus AWS GovCloud Regions and AWS Local Zones. It's also the first Direct Connect location in Peru to support 100 Gbps connections with MACsec encryption.

Direct Connect lets you set up a private, physical network connection between AWS and your own data center, office, or colocation environment, bypassing the public internet.

The story so far

The Cirion data center in Lima was already a Direct Connect location, but this update expands the bandwidth and encryption options available there. Before this, Peru didn't have a location offering the 100 Gbps plus MACsec combination, so anyone needing that kind of high-capacity, high-security connection had to look elsewhere or work within tighter bandwidth limits.

What changes

  • The Lima location now offers a 100 Gbps dedicated connection option
  • MACsec encryption is now available, encrypting traffic at the physical link layer
  • You get private connectivity to all public AWS Regions except China, as well as AWS GovCloud and AWS Local Zones

For companies in Peru working in finance, telecom, or large-scale data processing, this means they can now secure a stable, high-bandwidth, encrypted connection to AWS locally, without routing traffic over the public internet. That should help with latency and make it easier to move security-sensitive workloads to the cloud.
