What was announced?

From AWS's What's New: AWS Parallel Computing Service (PCS), a managed service that simplifies running and scaling HPC workloads on AWS using Slurm, has expanded its security and compliance coverage. That means federal agencies, public sector organizations, and enterprises in regulated industries can now run sensitive, mission-critical HPC workloads on PCS while meeting their governance, security, and compliance obligations.

Why it matters

HPC workloads often handle heavy computation like simulations and analysis, so they show up in government agencies and regulated industries like healthcare and finance. But for those organizations to adopt a cloud service in the first place, it usually has to clear public certification and compliance bars like FedRAMP or HIPAA. This expanded coverage is an important step toward making PCS a safe choice for exactly those organizations.

What changes

Federal agencies, the public sector, and regulated enterprises that previously found PCS hard to adopt because of certification gaps can now run HPC workloads on it while still meeting their governance and security requirements.

  • FedRAMP Class C (formerly the Moderate baseline): available in US East (Ohio), US East (N. Virginia), and US West (Oregon)
  • FedRAMP Class D (formerly the High baseline): available in the AWS GovCloud (US) Regions
  • SOC 1, 2, and 3: included in these reports, which provide independent third-party assurance over control effectiveness
  • ISO: certified under the International Organization for Standardization
  • CSA STAR: certified under the Cloud Security Alliance's CCM 4.0
  • PCI DSS / PCI 3DS: included in these attestations for workloads handling payment card data
  • HIPAA: eligible
