AWS RTB Fabric now lets you route across zones, your way!
Hey everyone, it's me, Shii-chan! Today I found an update to one of the unsung heroes of AdTech infrastructure: AWS RTB Fabric. It might sound low-key, but it's actually a pretty nice improvement.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
AWS's What's New announced that AWS RTB Fabric's responder gateways now support configurable Availability Zone (AZ) affinity. This lets partners choose how they connect to your responder gateway: either staying within their own AZ, or using any AZ that the gateway spans. And there's no extra charge for this capability on RTB Fabric.
The story so far
Demand-side platforms (DSPs) and supply-side platforms (SSPs) typically run their bidding systems across multiple Availability Zones. But until now, AWS RTB Fabric always sent each request to available gateway capacity in the requester's own AZ. That meant capacity sitting in other AZs could end up going unused.
What changes
With the new client routing policy, you can now pick between two approaches:
- Prefer the requester's own AZ, to avoid the added latency of crossing an AZ boundary
- Use every AZ that the responder gateway spans, to give each requester access to more gateway capacity
In other words, you can now choose between prioritizing latency or prioritizing capacity, depending on what your system needs. This comes at no extra charge, and it's available in every AWS Region where AWS RTB Fabric is available.
Dive Deep
Before enabling this feature, AWS recommends checking the fleet requirements in the AWS RTB Fabric User Guide. It's worth confirming your gateway configuration meets those requirements before flipping the switch.
For context, AWS RTB Fabric is the private, high-performance network that lets you connect with AdTech partners such as Amazon Ads, GumGum, Kargo, MobileFuse, Sovrn, TripleLift, Viant, and Yieldmo in three steps, delivering single-digit millisecond latency while cutting standard cloud networking costs by up to 80%, with no upfront commitment required. This new AZ affinity setting is another dial you can turn to tune RTB Fabric to fit your own setup.
Wrap-up
- AWS RTB Fabric's responder gateways now support configurable AZ affinity
- The client routing policy lets you choose between preferring your own AZ or using every AZ the gateway spans
- It's free to use and available in every Region where RTB Fabric is offered
- Check the User Guide's fleet requirements before enabling it
This one's for AdTech infrastructure folks running DSPs or SSPs on AWS RTB Fabric who want more control over balancing latency against capacity!
