Did you know AWS Sustainability now tracks water use too?

What was announced?

Over on AWS What's New, AWS announced that AWS Sustainability now includes water withdrawals data. Alongside the existing carbon emissions data, you can now view annual water usage tied to your AWS workloads too.

The story so far

AWS Sustainability started out as a way to visualize the carbon emissions tied to your workloads. But environmental impact isn't just about carbon — the water used to run data centers matters too. Until now, there was no way to track that water usage through the service, leaving a gap in the full picture.

What changes

You can now check both carbon emissions and water withdrawals data broken down by:

• AWS Region
• Service
• AWS account

The data is refreshed annually and available through both the AWS Sustainability console and API. The numbers represent the total volume of water withdrawn for data center operations, and efficiency improvements show up as lower withdrawal volumes over time.

There's no additional charge for this, and it's available in every AWS Region where AWS Sustainability itself is available.
