AWS Wickr Can Now Retain Messages Across Your Whole Network!

Hi everyone, it's Shiichan! Today I found an update to AWS's secure collaboration tool, AWS Wickr, so let me walk you through it.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced a new managed feature for AWS Wickr called Data Retention Service. Wickr is an enterprise-grade collaboration product offering end-to-end encrypted messaging, file management, screen sharing, and voice/video conferencing, and this new feature is for Premium users.

The story so far

Until now, retaining and archiving messages in Wickr meant setting up a container-based approach yourself. That traditional container method required you to handle deployment, scaling, and monitoring largely on your own — a real operational burden even though it was needed for compliance.

What changes

Data Retention Service is a cloud-native alternative that removes that burden. Its serverless architecture means simplified deployment, with managed infrastructure, automatic scaling, and monitoring all handled for you. And it keeps Wickr's end-to-end encryption standards intact, so you don't trade away security to meet archiving requirements.

Here's what gets retained:

  • Direct messages within your network
  • Conversations in Groups
  • Conversations in Rooms, including exchanges with external federated team members

Dive Deep

Wickr Premium customers can opt in to this feature on a per-network basis. It's currently available in these regions:

  • US East (N. Virginia)
  • Canada (Central)
  • Asia Pacific (Sydney)
  • Asia Pacific (Tokyo)
  • Asia Pacific (Singapore)
  • Europe (Frankfurt)
  • Europe (Stockholm)
  • Europe (Zurich)
  • AWS GovCloud (US-West)

Detailed setup steps are available in the AWS Wickr administrator guide.

Wrap-up

  • AWS Wickr gets a new Premium-only feature: Data Retention Service
  • It replaces self-managed, container-based data retention with a serverless managed service
  • Direct messages, Groups, and Rooms (including external federated conversations) can be retained network-wide
  • End-to-end encryption standards remain intact
  • Available across 9 regions including the US, Canada, APAC, Europe, and GovCloud, opt-in per network

If you're an admin at a company with compliance requirements around message archiving and audit trails, this update is exactly for you!
