2.5x the Memory Bandwidth: EC2 R8i and R8i-flex Land in a New Region!
Hi everyone, it's me, Shii-chan!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to AWS What's New, Amazon EC2 R8i and R8i-flex instances are now available in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud (Germany) region. R8i and R8i-flex are memory-optimized instances powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors available only on AWS.
The story so far
R8i and R8i-flex were already available in other regions, and now they've expanded into the AWS European Sovereign Cloud (Germany) region too, meeting the sovereign cloud need to keep data and compute within the EU.
What changes
Here are the performance numbers:
- Up to 15% better price-performance compared to previous-generation Intel-based instances
- 2.5x more memory bandwidth than the previous generation
- 20% higher performance than R7i, with even higher gains for specific workloads
- Up to 30% faster for PostgreSQL, up to 60% faster for NGINX, and up to 40% faster for AI deep learning recommendation models
That means memory-hungry databases, caches, and analytics workloads can now run at high performance in this region too.
Dive Deep
R8i-flex is AWS's first memory-optimized Flex instance, offering common sizes from large to 16xlarge for memory-intensive workloads that don't fully use all their resources. R8i offers all 13 sizes, including 2 bare metal sizes, plus the newly added 96xlarge size. It's also SAP-certified, delivering 142,100 aSAPS — the highest among comparable machines across both on-premises and cloud environments. This is a great fit for workloads with continuous high CPU usage or that need the largest instance sizes.
Wrap-up
