Amazon EC2 X2idn Instances Have Landed in the Hong Kong Region!

Hi, it's me! Today I've got a nice update from AWS's Hong Kong Region: there's a new memory-optimized instance option available there now.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that the memory-optimized Amazon EC2 X2idn instances are now available in the Asia Pacific (Hong Kong) Region. X2idn instances are powered by 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors and built with the AWS Nitro System. They're designed for memory-intensive workloads and deliver improved performance compared to the previous generation X1 instances.

The story so far

X2idn instances were already available in other regions, but not yet in Hong Kong. Teams running systems in Hong Kong that needed a lot of memory had to either pick a different region to get this specific instance type, or make do with a different instance type instead.

What changes

People keeping their data and workloads in the Hong Kong Region can now pick X2idn instances without crossing regions. This is especially good news for teams who want to keep memory-heavy databases or in-memory processing entirely within Hong Kong.

Dive Deep

X2idn instances carry broad SAP certifications. Here's what they support:

  • Business Suite on HANA
  • SAP S/4HANA
  • Data Mart Solutions on HANA
  • Business Warehouse on HANA
  • SAP BW/4HANA
  • SAP NetWeaver on any database

That's reassuring news if you're running SAP HANA workloads in Hong Kong. That said, the announcement page didn't include specific instance sizes, pricing, or detailed vCPU/memory breakdowns, so check AWS's instance type and pricing pages for those details before you dive in.

Wrap-up

  • The memory-optimized Amazon EC2 X2idn instances are now available in the Asia Pacific (Hong Kong) Region
  • They're built on 3rd generation Intel Xeon Scalable Processors and the AWS Nitro System, with better performance than the previous generation X1
  • They're certified for SAP workloads including Business Suite on HANA, SAP S/4HANA, and SAP BW/4HANA
