EMR on EKS Gets a 30% Cut in EMR Charges!
Hi, it's Shiichan!
AWS What's NewThis one's a happy price-cut story. If you run Spark on EKS, take a look!
What was announced?
According to AWS What's New, the EMR charge added to EKS when you run EMR on EKS is being reduced by 30 percent.
- The cut applies to both the per-vCPU-hour charge and the per-GB-hour charge
- The underlying Amazon EKS charges stay the same
- All EMR workloads on the EKS deployment option benefit
What changes
You can run Apache Spark workloads on Amazon EKS at a lower cost. The new price applies to your EMR on EKS workloads automatically, so you don't need to do anything.
One thing to keep in mind: only the EMR portion goes down. EKS charges are unchanged, so your total bill won't drop by a full 30%.
Dive Deep
Here is what the announcement tells us:
- Availability: all AWS Regions where Amazon EMR on EKS is available
- Action required: none, because the new price is applied automatically
The announcement we read doesn't list the new per-unit prices. Check the Amazon EMR pricing page for exact numbers.
Wrap-up
- The EMR charge for EMR on EKS is down 30 percent
- It covers both vCPU-hours and GB-hours, while EKS charges stay as they are
- It's available in all Regions where EMR on EKS is offered, and applies automatically
If you run Spark on EKS and keep an eye on costs, this is good news for you!
