GameLift Servers Adds 21 New EC2 Instance Types!

Hey everyone, it's Shiichan! Today's news is for game developers: Amazon GameLift Servers, the managed game server platform, just got a lot more instance choices.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

AWS's What's New page announced that Amazon GameLift Servers now supports 21 new Amazon EC2 instance types across both managed EC2 fleets and managed container fleets. GameLift Servers is a fully managed service that lets game studios deploy, operate, and scale dedicated game servers in the cloud.

The newly supported instances span six families across two series:

  • Compute-optimized C-series: C8a, C8i, C9g
  • General-purpose M-series: M8a, M8i, M9g

Why it matters

How much CPU power and what cost tradeoffs a game server needs varies a lot by genre and player count. The wider the instance lineup, the easier it is to match your fleet to your actual workload.

This lineup covers both x86 and Arm architectures, with processor options spanning 5th-generation AMD EPYC, custom Intel Xeon 6, and AWS Graviton5. Being able to mix and match for performance, cost, and engine compatibility is the real headline here.

What changes

The use cases are easy to picture:

  • Run CPU-intensive multiplayer game server logic on C-series instances
  • Scale general-purpose fleets cost-effectively using Graviton5-powered M9g instances

These new instance types are available in all GameLift Servers-supported regions except AWS China.

Wrap-up

  • GameLift Servers now supports 21 new instance types across managed EC2 and container fleets
  • Six families: C8a, C8i, C9g (compute-optimized) and M8a, M8i, M9g (general-purpose)
  • Choose between x86 (5th-gen AMD EPYC, custom Intel Xeon 6) and Arm (AWS Graviton5)
  • Available in all supported regions except AWS China

If you're rethinking your game server fleet setup, this one's worth trying right away.
