Hi, I'm Shii-chan! Today I've got a regional expansion update for one of AWS's genomics services.

What was announced?

AWS shared in its What's New feed that AWS HealthOmics private workflows are now available in two more Regions: Asia Pacific (Tokyo) and US East (Ohio). AWS HealthOmics is a HIPAA-eligible, fully managed bioinformatics workflow service. It lets you build genomics data analysis pipelines using familiar languages like Nextflow, WDL, and CWL, and it's used across research, drug discovery, and agriculture science.

The story so far

Until now, private workflows were only available in US East (N. Virginia), US West (Oregon), Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland, London), Israel (Tel Aviv), and Asia Pacific (Seoul, Singapore). For research institutions and healthcare organizations with strict data residency or compliance requirements, that sometimes meant there simply wasn't a suitable Region to run their workloads in.

What changes

With Tokyo and Ohio added, research institutions and pharmaceutical companies that need to keep data in Japan, and organizations wanting a second US East footprint, now have more Region choices.

Here's the full list of Regions where private workflows are available now:

  • US East (N. Virginia, Ohio)
  • US West (Oregon)
  • Europe (Frankfurt, Ireland, London)
  • Israel (Tel Aviv)
  • Asia Pacific (Seoul, Singapore, Tokyo)

Dive Deep

The feature set itself hasn't changed with this release — it's the same HealthOmics capabilities, now reachable from the new Regions too:

  • Git integrations for version-controlled workflow development
  • Third-party container registry support through Amazon ECR
  • Migration of existing pipelines using Nextflow, WDL, and CWL

The point of HealthOmics is letting teams keep full data provenance and compliance while focusing on the science instead of managing infrastructure.
