MediaLive's New Video Aligned Locking Keeps Streams in Sync Without Timecode
Hey everyone, it's Shii-chan! Today's news makes video pipelines a bit smarter behind the scenes — let's dive in!
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
This comes from AWS What's New. AWS Elemental MediaLive now supports a new feature called Video Aligned Locking, a way to synchronize video pipelines without requiring timecode from the source.
The story so far
Until now, achieving frame-accurate locking across video outputs meant investing in specialized hardware or managing complex, external synchronization workflows. Timecode is generally standard for highly produced, traditional broadcast content, but it's often unavailable and hard to manage in typical digital streaming workflows.
What changes
Video Aligned Locking uses visual signatures to automatically identify and align specific frames across multiple video streams. This lets customers achieve frame-accurate input switching across standard pipeline channels, as well as linked, cross-region single-pipeline channels — all without needing timecode or extra hardware.
Dive Deep
Video Aligned Locking supports the following outputs:
- HLS
- MediaPackage
- CMAF Ingest
- UDP
- SRT
For configuration details, check the Requirements for Video Aligned Locking documentation, and for the bigger picture on channel synchronization, see the guide on Implementing Pipeline Locking. Video Aligned Locking is available in all AWS Regions where AWS Elemental MediaLive is available.
Wrap-up
- MediaLive's new Video Aligned Locking synchronizes video pipelines without timecode
- Uses visual signatures to automatically identify and align frames across multiple streams
- Enables frame-accurate input switching on both standard pipeline channels and linked, cross-region single-pipeline channels
- Supports HLS, MediaPackage, CMAF Ingest, UDP, and SRT outputs
- Available in every AWS Region where MediaLive is available
Great news for broadcast and streaming engineers who've been wrestling with sync in timecode-free environments!
