What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon RDS for SQL Server's Bring Your Own Media (BYOM) feature is now available in 10 additional regions:

  • Asia Pacific (Taipei)
  • Asia Pacific (Hyderabad)
  • Asia Pacific (Jakarta)
  • Asia Pacific (Malaysia)
  • Asia Pacific (Melbourne)
  • Asia Pacific (New Zealand)
  • Asia Pacific (Thailand)
  • Europe (Milan)
  • Europe (Spain)
  • Mexico (Central)

The story so far

BYOM lets you reuse your existing Microsoft SQL Server licenses (with active Software Assurance) on Amazon RDS through Microsoft's License Mobility program. It's a handy way to cut licensing costs, but until now it wasn't available in the regions listed above.

What changes

With this expansion, you can now bring your existing SQL Server licenses into Amazon RDS in these 10 regions too, without buying new ones. It supports SQL Server 2019, 2022, and 2025, and it's integrated with AWS License Manager, so you can track license usage across your AWS environment for compliance.
