What was announced?
According to AWS's What's New, Amazon RDS for SQL Server Developer Edition is now available in 13 additional AWS Regions:
- Asia Pacific (Hong Kong, Taipei, Hyderabad, Jakarta, Malaysia, Melbourne, New Zealand, Thailand)
- Canada West (Calgary)
- Europe (Milan, Spain)
- Israel (Tel Aviv)
- Mexico (Central)
The story so far
SQL Server Developer Edition includes all the functionality of Enterprise Edition, but it's free of license charges when used as a development and test system. Until now, though, its regional availability was limited, so teams that wanted to use it close to their own data or users sometimes had to reach for a more distant region instead.
What changes
With this expansion, developers in these 13 regions can now build and test their applications closer to their data and production environments. That shorter physical distance means lower latency and a simpler development workflow overall — a welcome update especially for teams operating in these newer Asia Pacific and European regions.
