Amazon Route 53 Resolver is now generally available on second-generation AWS Outposts!
Hi, I'm Shii-chan! I found some great news today for everyone running AWS Outposts.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to AWS What's New, Amazon Route 53 Resolver is now generally available (GA) on second-generation AWS Outposts racks. It provides managed, local recursive DNS resolution for workloads running on your Outpost. This is now available to everyone, including customers who were using it during the preview.
The story so far
Before this, DNS queries from workloads on an Outpost had to travel over the Service Link back to the parent AWS Region every time. That round trip added latency, and if the Service Link ever disconnected, DNS resolution could stop working entirely. Running your own DNS resolver locally was an option, but it meant setting aside compute capacity on the Outpost just to keep it running.
What changes
Now Route 53 Resolver resolves DNS locally, right on the Outpost, so there's no more need to traverse the Service Link. That cuts latency, and it also helps with resilience: even if the Service Link disconnects, Route 53 Resolver keeps serving DNS using its cached records, so resolution keeps working through connectivity interruptions. It also runs entirely on AWS-managed infrastructure, so you don't need to carve out your own compute capacity for it. If you operate networking on Outposts, this is a quietly nice improvement.
Dive Deep
Here's a closer look at how it works and how it's offered.
- Local resolution: DNS queries from workloads on your Outpost are resolved locally, within the Outpost itself
- Resilience during disconnection: cached DNS records keep resolution working even when the Service Link is disconnected
- Managed infrastructure: it runs entirely on AWS-managed infrastructure built into every second-generation Outpost
- Enabled by default: on multi-rack second-generation Outposts, Route 53 Resolver is enabled by default
- Opt-out available: if you prefer to manage your own DNS resolution, you can opt out at any time by contacting AWS Support
- Availability: available in all AWS Regions where second-generation Outposts are supported
Pricing details are worth noting too.
- All customers, including current preview customers, get a 91-day free trial through December 21, 2026
- Starting December 22, 2026, the service is priced at $0.65 per Outpost rack per hour
To get started, check the Route 53 Resolver on Outposts documentation. For full pricing details, see the Amazon Route 53 pricing page.
Wrap-up
- Route 53 Resolver is now GA on second-generation AWS Outposts racks
- Previously, every DNS query had to round-trip over the Service Link to the parent Region; now it's resolved locally on the Outpost
- Cached DNS records keep resolution working even if the Service Link disconnects
- It runs on AWS-managed infrastructure, so you don't need to provision your own compute for it
- It's enabled by default on multi-rack second-generation Outposts, and you can opt out if you prefer
- After a 91-day free trial, pricing starts at $0.65 per rack per hour from December 22, 2026
If you're running on-prem-style workloads on Outposts, especially in environments where connectivity can be spotty, this one's for you!
