Say goodbye to S3's 30-day wait! Move data to low-cost storage from day one

Hey everyone, it's Shiichan! Today's news is one you won't want to miss if you're looking to trim your S3 storage costs.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

Over on AWS What's New, AWS announced that Amazon S3 has removed the 30-day minimum retention period that was previously required before transitioning objects to S3 Standard-Infrequent Access (S3 Standard-IA) and S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access (S3 One Zone-IA). You can now transition objects to these storage classes starting the very day they're created.

The story so far

Until now, objects stored in S3 Standard had to sit there for at least 30 days before you could transition them to S3 Standard-IA or S3 One Zone-IA. For data that goes cold within hours or days, like backups, log analytics data, or compliance data, that 30-day window just meant paying more than necessary while waiting it out.

What changes

You can now configure S3 Lifecycle rules to transition objects to S3 Standard-IA or S3 One Zone-IA as soon as 0 days after creation. You can set this up from the S3 console, AWS CLI, or SDKs.

S3 Standard-IA and S3 One Zone-IA keep millisecond-level access while offering up to 40% lower storage costs than S3 Standard. This change means you can start reaping those cost savings much sooner.

This is especially useful for:

  • Backup data
  • Log analytics data
  • Data kept for compliance purposes

All of these tend to go cold almost as soon as they're written, so instead of sitting in the pricier tier for 30 days, they can now move to the lower-cost tier right away.

This update is already live in every AWS Region where S3 Standard-IA and S3 One Zone-IA are available. Check the Amazon S3 pricing page for cost details.

Wrap-up

  • The 30-day minimum retention requirement for transitioning to S3 Standard-IA and S3 One Zone-IA has been removed
  • You can set Lifecycle rules to transition objects 0 days after creation
  • You keep millisecond access while unlocking up to 40% lower costs than S3 Standard right from the start
  • It's a great fit for backups, log analytics, and compliance data that go cold quickly
  • Available now in every region where S3 Standard-IA and S3 One Zone-IA are supported

If you're storing a lot of logs or backups in S3 and want to cut storage costs, this is worth trying right away!
