SageMaker Unified Studio Can Finally Connect Directly to Power BI!

Hi, I'm Shii-chan! Today I found an update to Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio that makes connecting your analytics tools a bit easier. Let's take a look!

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

This comes from AWS What's New. Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio now supports ODBC connections, so Microsoft Power BI and other ODBC-compatible tools can connect directly to governed data inside a project, using the Amazon Athena ODBC driver.

The story so far

Until now, the project overview page only had a JDBC connection view. Teams standardized on tools like Power BI, which typically connect over ODBC, had no way to reach SageMaker Unified Studio data through their existing workflow.

What changes

The project overview page now has an ODBC connection details view alongside the existing JDBC view. From the JDBC and ODBC connections tab, you can copy the connection string and its parameters for a DSN-less connection, or use them to set up a named DSN.

There are two authentication modes to choose from.

  • SageMakerBrowserIdc — opens a browser to sign in through AWS IAM Identity Center and your external identity provider
  • SageMakerIam — uses temporary AWS credentials

This means data analysts who already live in Power BI can reach governed data without switching tools.

Dive Deep

You'll need Amazon Athena ODBC driver version 2.2.0.1 or later. It's available today in every AWS Region where SageMaker Unified Studio is available, at no additional cost. For setup details, check the Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio User Guide and the Amazon Athena ODBC driver documentation.

Wrap-up

  • SageMaker Unified Studio now supports ODBC connections, giving Power BI and other ODBC tools direct access to governed data
  • The project overview page gains an ODBC connection details view alongside the existing JDBC view
  • Two auth modes: SageMakerBrowserIdc (browser sign-in) and SageMakerIam (temporary credentials)
  • Requires Athena ODBC driver 2.2.0.1+; available in every Region at no extra cost

A handy update for data analysts and analytics teams who live in Power BI!
