Hey everyone, it's Shii-chan! Today I found news that's great for anyone who wants the latest AWS experience on-premises but doesn't have room for a whole data center. It's a powerful new Outposts option packed into a single rack.

What was announced?

According to the AWS What's New, second-generation single-rack AWS Outposts is now generally available! It's a self-contained 42U rack that integrates compute, storage, and networking into a single compact unit, purpose-built for workloads that need low latency, local data processing, and data residency.

Here's what a single rack delivers:

  • Up to 2,688 vCPU
  • Up to 100 TB of Amazon EBS storage

It supports the same latest x86-powered EC2 instances as multi-rack Outposts:

  • General purpose: M7i, M8i
  • Compute-optimized: C7i, C8i
  • Memory-optimized: R7i, R8i
  • Outposts accelerated networking: Bmn-sf2e, Bmn-cx2, Bmn-cx3a

Why it matters

Industries like manufacturing and gaming often operate in locations with limited rack space and power. For those sites, deploying a full multi-rack Outposts was often a real physical hurdle.

This single-rack option gives those teams a way to bring the latest AWS compute, storage, and networking on-premises without needing more space or power — a direct path to modernize using what they already have.

What changes

Both single-rack and multi-rack Outposts offer a consistent experience: the same AWS APIs, management console, automation, governance policies, and security controls across AWS Regions and on-premises locations. The big win here is that teams with space-constrained locations can finally access the latest instance types and features on-premises, without compromise.
