Log Explorer's Dataset Configuration Just Got a Lot Easier to Navigate!
Hey there, it's Shii! Today I've got a small but genuinely useful update from the Cloudflare Changelog, all about logging.
Cloudflare ChangelogWhat was announced?
Cloudflare's Changelog announced a refresh of the dataset configuration screen in Log Explorer. Log Explorer is the dashboard feature for storing and searching your logs, and now the screen where you decide which fields and events get ingested is easier to read and use.
Here are the four main changes.
- Grouped field selection: fields are now organized by category, and each group shows how many fields are currently selected
- Field details: each field now shows its data type, with required or deprecated fields clearly marked
- Bulk controls: you can select all fields at once, or reset your selection back to the dataset defaults
- Ingestion filters: choose whether to ingest all events or only the ones matching your conditions
These new controls show up when you add a dataset, or when you select "Actions > Edit" on an existing enabled dataset.
The story so far
Log Explorer already let you narrow down which fields and events got ingested, but it wasn't easy to tell how fields were categorized, or which ones were required versus deprecated, just by looking at the screen. Bulk actions like selecting everything or resetting to defaults also took more manual effort than they probably should have. This refresh is Cloudflare cleaning up exactly that gap between "you can configure it" and "it's actually pleasant to configure."
What changes
Teams using Log Explorer can now put together their ingestion configuration faster and more accurately.
- Grouped fields mean less time hunting for the field you need
- Type and deprecation markers let you spot "oh, this field isn't usable anymore" right from the config screen
- Bulk select and reset make setting up a new dataset much less tedious
- Ingestion filters let you narrow ingestion down to only the events you actually care about
Ingestion filters in particular should be welcome for any team that's been frustrated by logs piling up with events they never needed.
Dive Deep
This update is all about the dashboard's configuration screen. The new controls appear when you add a dataset, or when you choose "Actions > Edit" on an existing dataset. For the detailed setup steps, Cloudflare points to its "Configure fields and filters" documentation, so check that out if you're ready to adjust your own settings.
Wrap-up
- Cloudflare refreshed the dataset configuration screen in Log Explorer
- The four highlights are grouped field selection, field details with type/deprecation markers, bulk select/reset, and ingestion filters
- You'll find the new screen when adding a dataset or via "Actions > Edit" on an existing one
- A welcome update if you're regularly the one tuning Log Explorer's ingestion settings
