EC2 C8gd/M8gd/R8gd instances are rolling out to new regions!

Hey, it's me! Today's news is about AWS rolling out a few EC2 instance types to more regions.

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, the Amazon EC2 C8gd, M8gd, and R8gd instances are now available in additional regions.

  • C8gd instances: now available in Asia Pacific (Singapore)
  • M8gd instances: now available in Mexico (Central) and Asia Pacific (Melbourne)
  • R8gd instances: now available in Europe (Zurich)

These instances stand out for packing up to 11.4 TB of local NVMe-based SSD block storage.

Why it matters

C8gd, M8gd, and R8gd all run on AWS Graviton4 processors, which deliver up to 30% better performance than Graviton3-based instances. That translates to up to 40% higher performance for I/O-intensive database workloads and up to 20% faster query results for real-time data analytics. For workloads that need fast local storage, having more regions to choose from is a quietly welcome upgrade.

What changes

If you wanted to use C8gd, M8gd, or R8gd but your region wasn't supported, you now have Singapore, Mexico (Central), Melbourne, or Zurich to choose from. Running closer to your users means lower latency while still getting the benefits of fast local storage.

  • Built on the AWS Nitro System, available in 12 different sizes
  • Up to 50 Gbps of network bandwidth and up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth to Amazon EBS
  • EC2 instance bandwidth weighting lets you adjust the network/EBS bandwidth split in 25% increments
  • The 24xlarge, 48xlarge, metal-24xl, and metal-48xl sizes also support Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) networking
