Amazon EC2 I7i Gets Up to 23% Faster — Now Live in Thailand and Israel!

Hi, I'm Shii-chan! Today's news from AWS is about a regional expansion for a storage-optimized instance family.

AWS What's New aws.amazon.com

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, the high-performance storage-optimized Amazon EC2 I7i instances are now available in two new Regions: Asia Pacific (Thailand) and Israel (Tel Aviv).

The story so far

Until now, I7i instances weren't available in either of these Regions. If you needed that level of performance but didn't have a nearby Region offering I7i, you'd have had to reach out to a different Region, which isn't ideal if you care about geography.

What changes

If you're running (or planning to run) workloads in Thailand or Israel, you can now get I7i's performance directly from a local Region. It's a great fit for I/O-intensive, latency-sensitive workloads that need very high random IOPS with near real-time latency against small-to-medium datasets.

Dive Deep

I7i instances run on 5th Gen Intel Xeon Processors with an all-core turbo frequency of 3.2 GHz, and here's how they improve on the previous-generation I4i instances:

  • Compute performance: up to 23% better
  • Price performance: more than 10% better
  • Real-time storage performance: up to 50% better
  • Storage I/O latency: up to 50% lower
  • Storage I/O latency variability: up to 60% lower

As AWS puts it:

up to 23% better compute performance and more than 10% better price performance over previous generation I4i instances

On the storage side, I7i instances use 3rd generation AWS Nitro SSDs and offer up to 45 TB of NVMe storage. They also support torn write prevention for block sizes up to 16 KB, which helps eliminate database write performance bottlenecks.

The family ships in 11 sizes total — nine virtual sizes plus two bare metal sizes — with up to 100 Gbps of network bandwidth and 60 Gbps of Amazon EBS bandwidth.

Wrap-up

  • Amazon EC2 I7i is now available in the Asia Pacific (Thailand) and Israel (Tel Aviv) Regions
  • Up to 23% better compute performance and over 10% better price performance versus I4i
  • 3rd generation AWS Nitro SSDs deliver up to 45 TB of NVMe storage with up to 50% lower I/O latency
  • 11 total sizes (9 virtual + 2 bare metal), with up to 100 Gbps network and 60 Gbps EBS bandwidth

This one's for engineers running I/O-intensive, low-latency workloads out of the Thailand or Israel Regions!
