What was announced?

According to AWS's What's New, the storage-optimized Amazon EC2 I8g instances are now generally available in the AWS GovCloud (US East, US West) Regions. I8g is designed to deliver EC2's best performance for storage-intensive workloads.

The story so far

I8g instances were already available in commercial Regions, but GovCloud (US) wasn't an option yet. Teams running government-focused workloads in GovCloud couldn't take advantage of I8g's performance until now.

What changes

Teams using GovCloud (US) can now tap into I8g's high storage performance directly. I/O-heavy workloads like transactional databases, real-time distributed databases, and AI/LLM pre-processing can now run comfortably in GovCloud too.

Dive Deep

I8g runs on AWS Graviton4 processors, offering up to 60% better compute performance than the previous-generation I4g. On the storage side, third-generation AWS Nitro SSDs power local NVMe storage with up to 65% better real-time storage performance per TB, up to 50% lower storage I/O latency, and up to 60% lower latency variability.

It's offered in 11 sizes, up to a 48xlarge plus a metal size, with up to 1.5 TiB of memory, 45 TB of local storage, and up to 100 Gbps of network bandwidth.

Typical use cases include:

  • Transactional databases like MySQL, PostgreSQL, and HBase
  • NoSQL databases such as Aerospike, MongoDB, ClickHouse, and Apache Druid
  • Real-time analytics and data lakehouses built on Apache Spark
  • Pre-processing for AI/LLM training
