EC2 M8a Instances Arrive in Asia Pacific (Hyderabad)!

Hi, I'm Shii-chan! Today I want to share the news that another EC2 instance type just expanded into a new region.

What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, the general-purpose Amazon EC2 M8a instances are now available in the Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) region. M8a instances are powered by 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors (formerly code named Turin), with a maximum frequency of 4.5 GHz.

The story so far

M8a instances were already available in other regions before this Hyderabad launch, as the successor to the M7a family. Compared to M7a, the announcement highlights these performance gains:

  • Up to 30% higher performance versus M7a
  • Up to 19% better price-performance compared to M7a
  • 45% more memory bandwidth than M7a

The extra memory bandwidth makes M8a a better fit for latency-sensitive workloads too. This update simply brings that same lineup to the Hyderabad region.

What changes

If you're running workloads in the Hyderabad region, you can now move general-purpose workloads that were on M7a (or similar instances) over to M8a to get better performance and price-performance. For specific workloads, the gains are even bigger:

  • Up to 60% faster for the GroovyJVM benchmark
  • Up to 39% faster for the Cassandra benchmark

That's great news if you're running JVM-based applications or mid-size data stores like Cassandra.

M8a instances are built on the latest 6th generation AWS Nitro Cards. There are 12 sizes available, including 2 bare metal sizes. They're also SAP-certified, so they're a solid option if you're evaluating instances for SAP workloads.
