What was announced?

According to AWS What's New, Amazon EC2 M8gd and R8gd instances are now available in additional regions. Here's the breakdown:

  • Both M8gd and R8gd: Europe (Paris), Asia Pacific (Mumbai)
  • R8gd only, additionally: Europe (Stockholm, Milan), Asia Pacific (Osaka, Melbourne, Singapore, Taipei)

This isn't a brand-new instance family launch — it's the existing M8gd and R8gd families expanding into more regions.

The story so far

M8gd and R8gd are Graviton4-generation instances with local NVMe SSD storage that originally rolled out in a smaller set of regions. With this update, they're now spreading further across Europe and Asia Pacific, so people who didn't have them nearby before now have them as an option.

What changes

If your workloads live in Paris, Stockholm, Milan, Mumbai, Osaka, Melbourne, Singapore, or Taipei, you no longer need to reach into a far-away region to get fast local storage with Graviton4 performance. It becomes easier to build low-latency applications that use local NVMe storage closer to your users in these regions.

  • Storage: Up to 11.4 TB of local NVMe-based SSD block-level storage
  • Processor: Powered by AWS Graviton4, delivering up to 30% better performance over Graviton3-based instances
  • Foundation: Built on the AWS Nitro System, suited for applications that need high-speed, low-latency local storage
  • Sizes: 12 different sizes available for each instance type
  • Network bandwidth: Up to 50 Gbps
  • EBS bandwidth: Up to 40 Gbps
  • Flexible bandwidth allocation: EC2 instance bandwidth weighting configuration lets you adjust network and EBS bandwidth by 25% increments to better fit your workload
  • EFA support: Elastic Fabric Adapter networking is available on the 24xlarge, 48xlarge, metal-24xl, and metal-48xl sizes
