R8a Instances Land in Canada (Central): Up to 30% Faster Than R7a
Hi, I'm Shiichan! Today I caught another regional expansion update from AWS — the memory-optimized Amazon EC2 R8a instances just became available in a new location.
AWS What's NewWhat was announced?
According to AWS's What's New, Amazon EC2 R8a instances are now available in the AWS Canada (Central) region.
R8a instances are memory-optimized and powered by 5th Gen AMD EPYC processors (code-named Turin), with a maximum clock frequency of 4.5 GHz. They're built on the AWS Nitro System (with sixth-generation Nitro Cards) and designed for latency-sensitive workloads.
The story so far
R8a instances were already available in other regions, but they hadn't reached Canada (Central) until now. Teams running memory-intensive workloads there had to settle for a previous-generation instance type like R7a, or use a different region entirely.
What changes
With this rollout, users in Canada (Central) can now run the latest-generation R8a instances closer to their own data and users! That's a nice upgrade if you're running memory-hungry, high-performance workloads in this region, like SQL/NoSQL databases, distributed in-memory caches, in-memory databases, real-time big data analytics, or EDA (Electronic Design Automation) applications.
