What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that the new Graviton4-based database instances, R8g and M8g, are now available in additional regions for Amazon Aurora and Amazon RDS.

R8g is now generally available for Aurora (MySQL and PostgreSQL compatible) and RDS for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB in:

  • Asia Pacific (Hyderabad, Melbourne, Malaysia)
  • Europe (London, Paris, Zurich)
  • AWS GovCloud (US-East)
  • South America (Sao Paulo)
  • Mexico (Central)

M8g is now supported for RDS for PostgreSQL, MySQL, and MariaDB in:

  • US West (N. California)
  • Asia Pacific (Mumbai, Sydney, Hong Kong, Seoul, Malaysia, Singapore)
  • Canada West (Calgary)
  • Europe (Zurich, Milan, Paris)
  • South America (Sao Paulo)
  • Africa (Cape Town)

Why it matters

R8g and M8g are both Graviton4-based instances, offering up to 40% better performance and up to 29% better price/performance than equivalent Graviton3 instances (results vary by engine, version, and workload).

R8g also adds new 24xlarge and 48xlarge sizes, with specs to match: up to 192 vCPUs, an 8:1 memory-to-vCPU ratio with DDR5 memory, up to 50 Gbps of network bandwidth, and up to 40 Gbps of bandwidth to Amazon EBS. They're also built on the AWS Nitro System.

What changes

Plenty of teams have wanted Graviton4-generation database instances but didn't have them available in their region. With this expansion, if you're in one of the regions above, you can now boost both performance and price/performance simply by changing the instance type on your existing Aurora or RDS database — no big migration required. You can do it from the Amazon RDS Management Console or the AWS CLI.
