Amazon RDS for Db2 just landed in more regions!

Hi, it's Shii! While checking through AWS's latest updates, I found some good news for Db2 fans!

What was announced?

AWS What's New announced that the managed Db2 database service, Amazon RDS for Db2, is now available in five additional AWS Commercial Regions.

The new regions are:

  • Asia Pacific (Thailand)
  • Asia Pacific (Malaysia)
  • Asia Pacific (Taipei)
  • Mexico (Central)
  • Canada West (Calgary)

Why it matters

Amazon RDS for Db2 makes it easy to set up, operate, and scale Db2 databases in the cloud, letting you spin up an instance with automatically tuned parameters in minutes. With a Multi-AZ configuration, it also handles synchronous replication to a standby instance in a different Availability Zone, so you get solid availability too.

Some teams that wanted to use Db2 previously couldn't, simply because the service wasn't available in a region that fit their strategy. This expansion makes it a realistic option for more of them.

What changes

Users in these five new regions can now run Amazon RDS for Db2 while meeting latency and data residency requirements. Licensing stays flexible, with two options:

  • Hourly pay-as-you-go licensing through AWS Marketplace
  • Bring Your Own License (BYOL) if you already have one

Both options support Standard and Advanced Editions, and for development and testing, the Db2 Community Edition is available with no software licensing charges.
