Hey everyone, it's Shiichan! I found some good cost-saving news today for anyone running Amazon RDS for Oracle!

What was announced?

According to AWS's What's New, Amazon RDS for Oracle now offers Reserved Instances (RIs) for R8i and M8i instances. You can choose a 1-year or 3-year term, and it brings up to 53% savings compared to On-Demand pricing!

The story so far

R8i and M8i are the newest instance generations, powered by custom Intel Xeon 6 processors available only on AWS. Compared to the previous generation of Intel-based instances, they deliver up to 15% better price-performance and 2.5x more memory bandwidth. But until now, these new instance types didn't have any RI discount option, so anyone wanting to control costs had to stick with On-Demand pricing.

What changes

With this update, you can now buy RIs for Oracle databases running on R8i and M8i to cut costs significantly. And the flexibility here is what makes it especially nice:

  • RI benefits apply to both Multi-AZ and Single-AZ configurations
  • You can freely move between configurations within the same database instance class type and keep the discount, which is great for production workloads that change over time
  • Under the Bring Your Own License (BYOL) model, size flexibility applies too, so the discounted rate automatically covers any size within the same instance family
